MATS2320 Partial differential equations 1B (5 cr)
Tweet text
Description
A partial differential equation (PDE) is an equation involving an unknown function of two or more variables, and its partial derivatives. Partial differential equations have numerous applications to geometry, stochastics, mathematical finance, physics and image processing.
Introduction to partial differential equations: heat equation, wave equation, physical interpretations, different ways of solving the equations, properties of solutions, and representing solutions by computer.
Learning outcomes
Student
- recognizes heat equation and wave equation
- knows physical interpretations for the equations
- knows and can apply basic properties of the equations
- can solve simple PDE problems
- can represent solutions by computer
Additional information
The course is suitable and beneficial for prospective math teacher students as well. For instance, the course provides mathematical justifications for results related to heat conduction and behavior of waves.
For further studies on PDEs, the course Partial differential equations 2 is recommended.
The course is planned for fall 2025 and fall 2027.
