Description

The course introduces students to the international organisations that have an essential impact on regional and national cultural policies. It offers critical perspectives on international treaties and norms influencing cultures, cultural relations, and cultural rights.

Learning outcomes

 After completing the course, the student will:

  • be familiar with the most important international organisations and norms influencing cultural policy and politics and know their historical backgrounds

  • recognise the contradictions and disputes between the international ideals guiding policy-making and their practical implementations

  • be able to analyse the role of culture in international politics.

  • Reus-Smit, Christian (2018): On Cultural Diversity: International Theory in a World of Difference. Cambridge University Press

In addition, students will read two of the following:

  • Singh, J. P. (ed.) 2010: International Cultural Policies and Power.

  • De Beukelaer, Christiaan et al. (eds.) 2015: Globalization, Culture and Development.

  • Gielen, Pascal et al. (eds.) 2015: No Culture, No Europe: On the Foundation of Politics.

Description:
Lecture course.
Evaluation criteria:
The grading scale in all completion modes will be numerical: 0-5. The grade will be based on the evaluation of the assignments that measure the extent to which the learning goals have been achieved. In courses organized in the form of contact teaching, completion requires 80% attendance. For independent learning, completion of the unit requires that written assignments are completed and approved by the instructor in charge
