Essential lab safety for exchange students at the University of Jyväskylä. Obligatory, practical, and in English. Learn key safety practices!

Description

KEMY004 is designed for exchange international students, who have already completed laboratory course(s) at their home university, to give suitable introduction and training in laboratory work and safety at the University of Jyväskylä. The presence in the lectures and laboratory shifts is obligatory. The course is obligatory before one can start laboratory practice. The student gets acquainted with basic and prescribed practices in the laboratory. The key learning goals are laboratory and chemical safety, legislation, good laboratory practices and waste treatment. The performed exercises are reported and evaluated. The course is given in English.

Learning outcomes

The course provides guidance on laboratory safety, aligning with the regulations of the Department of Chemistry and other chemical laboratories in Finland. It covers a review of laboratory terminology and equipment, along with orientation to both synthetic and analytical work. Additionally, students will learn the process of maintaining a laboratory notebook and crafting scientific reports. The course aims to enhance group work skills and the ability to operate effectively in foreign laboratory settings.

Skills for Professional Life:

Students will acquire safe practices for working in Finnish laboratories, including those outside academic institutions. Interaction skills will be honed through collaborative teamwork. A deepened comprehension of synthetic chemistry, analytics, and scientific reporting will be gained, bolstering the students' capacity to function in an international laboratory environment.
