KEMS901 Maturity Exam for Master's Degree (0 cr)
Description
With the maturity exam, students demonstrate their in-depth familiarity with the topic of their thesis and their mastery of academic writing conventions. In addition, students whose school language has been Finnish or Swedish demonstrate in the maturity exam that their proficiency in either language is at the level of excellent.
A student does not need to demonstrate proficiency in Finnish or Swedish for the master’s degree if they already have demonstrated their language skills in the maturity exam for the bachelor’s degree. In this case, the abstract of the master's thesis is accepted as a maturity exam and a representative of the discipline can evaluate both the content and the language of the abstract. If a student hasn't demonstrated their language skills in the maturity exam for the bachelor’s degree, then the maturity exam will take the form of an exam and its language quality will be evaluated by a language specialist approved by the Centre for Multilingual Academic Communication (Movi).
As a rule, in international master's degree programmes, the maturity exam is written in English. Exceptions to this rule are students whose school language have been Finnish or Swedish but who have not demonstrated their language proficiency in a maturity exam for the bachelor’s degree. In this case, the maturity exam is written in the language of the student’s school education and will take the form of an exam.
