KEMS548 Advanced Laboratory Work in Organic Chemistry (1–10 cr)
Description
Advanced organic chemistry laboratory work course encompass a variety of tasks, including the analytical examination of organic substances, the use of instrumental analysis, the undertaking of complex synthesis processes, and learning about cutting-edge synthesis methodologies. Documentation of these activities is meticulously recorded in a laboratory notebook, and the findings from these tasks are comprehensively compiled and presented in written form as a report.
for example:
- Info-lecture KEMS548
- Microwave oven synthesis, 1 cr.
- Analysis of 3 substance, 1 cr.
- Air and moisture sensitive synthesis, 2cr.
- GC-MS -work, 1 credit
- Veronal synthesis, 2 cr.
- Organic synthesis I, 2 cr.
- Organic synthesis II, 1 cr.
- Structure analysis, 1 cr.
Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to familiarize the student with the synthesis and analysis methods of organic chemistry, structural research, as well as traditional and modern separation methods. The student will gain an understanding of how and for what kind of research organic chemistry analytical equipment can be used. The goal is also to become more familiar with safe laboratory practices, various traditional and modern multistage synthesis methods in organic chemistry, as well as isolation and purification methods for synthesis products and the analysis of the structures of synthesis products. The purpose of the syntheses performed in the student laboratory is to deepen the student's laboratory skills and knowledge in synthetic chemistry. The student understands the significance of resource-wise operation in laboratory work and knows the basics of safely disposing of chemical waste.
Work-life objectives:
- The student masters safe working practices in the laboratory.
- The student's interpersonal skills develop through group work.
- The student can take responsibility for their own work and scheduling.
- The student gains a deeper understanding of organic chemistry synthesis techniques, the analysis of the structures of synthesis products, and other aspects of chemical structure analytics.
