The course offers a detailed and up-to-date overview of the chemistry of main group elements (elements from groups 1, 2, and 13-18).

Description

The course will discuss:

  • typical compounds formed by main group elements (groups 1, 2, and 13-18), their preparation and reactions, 
  • organometallic compounds of main group elements.

Learning outcomes

A student who has successfully completed the course can:

  • explain and use the key concepts and terms of inorganic chemistry discussed in the course,
  • name the most common main group compounds as well as pathways for their synthesis as well as their typical reactions and applications,
  • apply valence bond and molecular orbital theory to explain the structures, properties, and chemistry of main group compounds,
  • explain the structure of a scientific research article and the basics of writing it,
  • prepare and give an oral presentation on a given topic to a peer group.

In addition to subject knowledge, the student practices, develops and/or strengthens general working life skills, such as:

  • understanding of the importance of critical thinking in the natural sciences,
  • language and communication skills,
  • analysis and problem-solving skills,
  • time management and directing one's own activities,
  • self-knowledge and resilience.

Additional information

The course will be lectured in academic years 2025-2026 and 2027-2028. It is possible to complete the course with an exam in academic years 2024-2025 and 2026-2027.

Description of prerequisites

Subject studies in chemistry, especially the courses KEMA2140 Introduction to The Chemistry of Main Group Elements and KEMA2151 Chemistry of Coordination Compounds (or previous course KEMA2150 Chemistry of Transition Metals), or similar knowledge.
