Do you want to understand biological phenomena and reactions through chemistry? This course provides a basic introduction to this fascinating world
Description
- Basic structures and structural elements of biomolecules; amino acids – proteins, sugars – carbohydrates, lipids – membranes, nucleotides – nucleic acids; role in the structure of the cell.
- Small biomolecules; vitamines, hormones, antibiotics.
- Physical and chemical factors affecting to biomolecular structure and function (thermodynamics, biomolecular reactions, bioenergitics).
- Basis of biocatalysis; enzymes.
Learning outcomes
After passing the course the student:
- Knows the basic structures of biomolecules and understand the physical and chemical factors affecting biomolecules.
- Understands typical phenomena and reactions related to biological chemistry.
- Recognizes the connection between chemistry and biological processes.
- Understands the principles of enzyme catalysis and the fundamentals of enzyme kinetics.
- Knows key anabolic and catabolic reactions.

- The basics of scientific thinking.
- Finding information, writing expert texts.

Recommended KEMP1140 Basics in Organic Chemistry or equivalent knowledge, or simultaneous participation of KEMP1140.
