KEMA2830 Structure and Reactivity in Organic Chemistry (4 cr)
Description
Introduction to carbonyl chemistry. Nucleophilic addition reactions to the carbonyl group. Reduction of carbonyl compounds. Organometallic reagents in carbonyl additions. Carboxylic acid derivatives - reactions via nucleophilic substition. Enolate chemistry: substitution reactions in the α carbon of carbonyl compounds. Carbonyl condensation reactions (Claisen and related condensations). Applications in industrial chemistry and biochemistry, including enzymatic reactions involving carbonyl groups in cellular metabolism.
Learning outcomes
The course develops students' expression in chemistry and problem solving skills. In exercises are learnt to solve demanding problems both individually and in groups. Problem sets and exercises are scheduled, so the course also teaches how to plan and execute on schedule.
The course will provide students with tools for understanding ethical and environmental problems relevant to the field and to seek sustainable solutions.
