During the course, you will be familiarized with the basics of quantum mechanics and apply the theory to determine the energy states of atoms and molecules.
Description
The course covers:
- Basics of quantum mechanics
- Electronic structure and spectroscopy of atoms
- Chemical bonding and electronic structure of molecules
- Molecular spectroscopy
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student:
- understands the basics of quantum mechanics and is able to apply the theory on simple model systems,
- realizes the connections between quantum mechanics and physical observables,
- understands the energy level structure of atoms and molecules,
- understands the interaction between the electromagnetic field and molecules,
- learns to interpret simple optical, vibrational and rotational spectra.
Workplace skills:
- Theoretical basics of spectroscopic analysis.
- Ability to solve chemical problems based on theory.
Description of prerequisites
Compulsory: KEMP1111 Chemical Reaction, KEMP1121 Chemical Equilibrium and KEMP1131 Chemical Bonding (or the previous courses KEMP1110 The World of Molecules, KEMP1120 Chemical Equilibrium and Energy and KEMP1130 Basics in Inorganic Chemistry or equivalent knowledge) and MATP211 and MATP212 Calculus 1 and 2 or equivalent mathematical skills.
