KEMA203 Analytical Chemistry 1 (3 cr)

Study level:
Intermediate studies
Grading scale:
0-5
Language:
English, Finnish
Responsible organisation:
Department of Chemistry
Curriculum periods:
2024-2025, 2025-2026, 2026-2027, 2027-2028

Description

  • acids and bases,
  • activity,
  • systematic treatment of equilibrium,
  • acid-base equilibrium and titrations,
  • buffer solutions,
  • gravimetric analysis

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student can
  • explain and recall the following concepts: activity, equilibrium constant and stability constant; the student is also able to evaluate the effect of ionic strength on equilibrium
  • use the systematic treatment of equilibrium
  • use and read the graphical diagrams of acid-base equilibrium for solving the pH of the solution and evaluating acid-base titrations.

Working life skills

  • apply the graphical diagrams to problem solving
  • understand how pH affects for example ions precipitation
  • apply the analytical methods treated in the course in laboratory exercises and future works.
