Description

There will be small reading groups (six topics and reading group sessions), in which you will discuss the literature on research methods on the basis of an expert presentation, produce a reading group report and, as individual work, familiarise yourself with six studies, which will be assessed from the perspective of the method under discussion.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, the student 1) knows the key areas of research methodology in software and communication engineering, 2) understands the basics of scientific activities that shape reality and the importance of research methods as part of research processes in the field, and 3) is aware of the basic principles of ethically sustainable research. The course will provide students skills and competencies for dissertation work.

Additional information

Obligatory for those students who are studying towards the degree of D.Sc. (Tech.), and do not have similar studies in their previous education.

Completed as reading group sessions and reports in either Finnish or English, according to the participants' choice.

Method 1

Description:
Reading group sessions and reports in either Finnish or English.
Evaluation criteria:
The course is based on a reading circle including six topics and gatherings. The meetings consist of an expert’s introduction, examination of the literature, production of a report. In addition, each participant will get acquainted with scientific research articles that will be evaluated from the perspective of the method under consideration. The reports will be written either in Finnish or English.
