Description

The course provides fundamental knowledge about the history and contemporary aspects of Finnish literature, visual arts, and music. It offers an overview of the canons of national art and key trends in popular culture (e.g., popular music, comics, film). During the course, students will become acquainted with local cultural institutions, such as art museums, as well as cultural events (e.g., concerts).

Learning outcomes

Upon completing the course, the student will:

- have an understanding of the key development and characteristics of Finnish cultural history

- be familiar with the main styles and artists in Finnish literature, visual arts, and music

- have knowledge about Finnish popular culture

- comprehend the significance of the arts and popular culture in constructing national identity across different eras

- be able to seek out cultural experiences of personal interest and reflect on their experiences among Finnish culture
