Description

Scientific discussion in one’s field of research, ethical discussions in one’s field of research, the phases of research, good scientific practice.

Learning outcomes

The doctoral student
  • has familiarised themself with the current debate in their field of research
  • is able to contribute to scientific debate both orally and in writing (in spoken and/or sign language)
  • is able to justify their own research decisions
  • understands the phases involved in conducting research
  • can act in an ethically responsible manner and in accordance with good scientific practice

Teaching language(s) and learning language(s): Finnish, English or other language used in this scientific community

Modes of completion: Presenting a research plan and research work, giving and receiving peer feedback. The modes of completion shall be agreed upon in more detail with both the teacher of the seminar and supervisor-in-charge. The doctoral student can also attend meetings of doctoral seminars in fields other than their own. The doctoral seminar cannot be completed through conference presentations, papers or posters, or scientific publication.

Assessment criteria: Assignments are assessed on the basis of how the doctoral student masters the contents of the study unit and achieves the learning outcomes of the study unit. To pass the course, the doctoral student must
  • actively participate in the seminar
  • present their research plan and the progress of their research at the seminar
  • participate in the doctoral seminar or equivalent so that the total amount of work corresponds to the 10 ECTS credits required

Study materials

The teacher of the seminar or equivalent will assign possible literature and/or other materials.
