The course introduces the basics of gender history and the history of sexuality and their significance in history and historical research.

Description

Historical changes in gender and sexuality are approached chronologically, thematically and cross-cuttingly by asking, for example, how and why the concepts related to the topics of the course have changed over time. The course introduces source work and teaches how to constructively discuss challenging and sensitive issues.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student will

  • identify the key perspectives, concepts and research traditions in the field of gender history and the history of sexuality and understand how they have changed over time
  • is able to perceive how gender as a perspective can be related to many different historical topics, times and methods in Finnish and international historical research
  • learn to ask why gender and sexuality matter and to discuss the issue constructively
  • recognise gender as a constructed socio-cultural category through which historical phenomena can be examined and interpreted
  • can examine gender in relation to other concurrent differences and classifications in society
  • be able to examine sources of historical research from the perspective of gender and sexuality
  • have developed their problem-solving skills
  • have acquired skills in analysing information and the ability to grasp broad issues
  • have developed skills in data mining and source criticism
  • have developed their argumentation skills
  • have gained experience in project skills by planning their own activities and time management
