HISA5013 Historical Violence Studies (5 cr)
Description
The
course places a special emphasis on acts of violence that are not the result of
organised crime. The areas of emphasis are intimate relationships,
institutions, and violence that has happened and been experienced in daily
life. The course is a component of the multidisciplinary study module on
violence studies.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student
- is familiar with the primary theories, explanation models, and source materials used in historical studies on violence
- is able to identify, categorise, and structure violent historical manifestations and their traits
- recognises the gendered aspect of violence
- comprehends the relationship between violence and shifts in social and cultural values and institutions
- comprehends the temporal and spatial diversity of violence

Study materials
One required book for each student (Knepper 2015) and two elective books are chosen from the following list for the book test, for a total of five credits. The responsible teacher agrees on the book choices in advance for the essay.
