THE BASICS OF THE HEAVY-ION EXPERIMENTS
  • Goals of the experiments

  • Quark-Gluon Plasma, QGP

  • Detectors in (relativistic heavy ion) experiments

  • Beam facilities, operation principles of accelerators

Heavy-ion physics program
  • Comparison to physics in proton-proton and e+e- collisions

  • Flow harmonics and hydrodynamics

  • pQCD and Fragmentation

  • Jet quenching

  • Chiral Magnetic Effect

  • QGP in small systems, particularly proton-lead or proton-proton

Programming materials for few topics are prepared. Students who are interested in learning physics with programming can be guided.

Learning outcomes

  • After the course, a student can describe the main goals and physics of the relativistic heavy ion collisions. She knows the basic principles of the measurement techniques used in the major detectors and accelerators related to the research, particularly LHC.

  • Student familiarizes himself with timely research topics and can explain them to his peers.

  • Student learns how to find scientific articles from the field and gets used to reading articles. She will enforce her learning strategies.

  • He will develop communication and presentation skills through weekly poster sessions and peer group work.  Therefore, this course is also suitable for undergraduate students who want to learn about physics in LHC.

Description of prerequisites

Basics of particle and statistical physics, particularly elementary particles and basic interactions, foundations of Quantum Chromo Dynamics (QCD), parton model, baryons, concept of cross sections and different cross sections in particle physics, hard (partonic) processes, relativistic kinematics, Bose-Einstein and Fermi-Dirac statistics.
