Learning outcomes

After finishing the course the student

  • knows the laws of thermodynamics

  • understands what entropy means
  • knows the most important thermodynamical potential
  • understands how a heat bath affect the system and why it leads to the Boltzmann distribution in energies.
  • Can derive thermodynamical variables starting from an energy spectrum and partition function

  • knows the thermodynamics of cyclic prosesses, such as heat engines, refrigerators, and heat pumps
  • Knows the connection between statistical physics and thermodynamics

  • has basic knowledge of the thermodynamics of phase transitions and can read phase diagrams

Description of prerequisites
