Learning outcomes

After completing the study unit the student

  • can explain wave-particle duality and its consequences
  • can describe quantization of energy, angular momentum and spin
  • knows the Schrödinger equation and the physical meaning of its solutions
  • can explain the basic structure of atoms and molecules
  • can explain Bose-Einstein and Fermi-Dirac distributions and their consequences
  • can explain basic phenomena of solid state physics

Description of prerequisites

FYSP1010 Introduction to Mechanics

  • Basic concepts like energy, momentuma and angular momentum

FYSP1020 Waves and Thermodynamics

  • Harmonic oscillations

FYSP1040 Introduction to Theory of Electricity

  • Point charge electric field

FYSP1050 Introduction to Electromagnetism

  • Magnetic field
  • Electromagnetic waves

MATP211-213 Calculus 1-3, especially:

  • Properties of elementary functions
  • Derivative and integral
  • Finding the maximum of a given function

MATA114 Differential equations, especially:

  • Concept of differential equation
  • Basic principles of solving an ordinary differential equation
  • Actual solving of differential equations is not required, known solutions to cases appearing in the course are given in course materials and textbook

MATA181 Vector calculus 1 (can be done during the same period), especially:

  • Functions of more than one variable
  • The concept of partial derivative

In addition, some basic properties of complex numbers are needed, see textbook
