Description

The student reads advanced level textbooks related to environmental science. The reading material is agreed together with the professor in charge of the degree program. Based on the selected reading material, either a book exam (eExam) is taken or a learning diary is made (the latter includes a 15 min. oral exam with the instructor). In order for the reading to be useful also for the master´s thesis, it is recommended to take the exam before the start of the master´s thesis work.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student:

- has good theoretical/methodical knowledge base on the relevant environmental science subject area

- can think critically about environmental science

- knows how to connect the topics and the master's thesis to a wider whole.

Additional information

Number of pages of reading material: 600-800s equivalent of English book text. Upon agreement, a small part of the exam can consist of scientific review articles or environmental science reports. (Note: English-language literature is equivalent to 2-2.5 times Finnish-language literature).

The written exam is performed as an eExam. Agreed separately with the degree officer professor.

Instructions for the learning journal:

1. List of read literature, including number of pages.

2. Thoughts before getting to know the material:

- Why did you choose this reading material ?

- What would you like to learn from this material?

3. Go through the material according to your own headings. Choose a maximum of 10 subheadings to write about. (The subheadings can either be according to the chapters/articles in the book, but other structures are also possible if you want to combine them).

Briefly describe each topic:

- what were the most important issues that the chapter/article of the book dealt with?

- What was your own perception before reading, what did you learn and what was perhaps surprising in the material?

- What was still unclear or what you would have liked to know more about

4. Your thoughts after reading the entire material

- What did you learn ?

- How does the read material affect your broader understanding of environmental science ?

- You can also assess which issues are generally still unclear to the scientific community, i.e. where the research is going at the moment (or at the time of writing the material).

5. Approximate length of the diary 15-20 pages (Times 12, 1.5 line width).
