ENVS2423 Instrumental environmental analyses (5 cr)
Description
This is a laboratory course in which students learn pretreatment of environmental samples (extraction methods) and how to use high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), gas chromatography (GC-FID and GC-MS), spectrophotometer, and mass spectrometer (MS). In the course, students learn how to identify organic compounds from chromatograms. Students keep records of their lab work by writing a learning diary. In the course, student extracts organic compounds from given environmental samples and determine what kind of organic compounds their sample includes. Students prepare a report of a given sample and present it to the whole group after two weeks of working in a laboratory.
Learning outcomes
Student::
- Knows different pretreatment and analyzing techniques and the importance of the quality assurance of his/her work.
- Knows which kind of equipment is needed for analyzation of specific problems.
- Understand the limits and possibilities of different measuring methods.
Additional information
Working in the laboratory will be done in pairs or groups.
