Description
This course is an introductory course to analyzing English using syntactic concepts and terminology as well as about the study of language – or linguistics, which gives you an overview of some central areas, concepts, methods and questions of the scientific study of language.
Learning outcomes
After this course, students will be able to:
to give an overview of the aims, methods and practices of linguistics, the scientific study of language
recognise the central levels of linguistic description (such as phonology, morphology, lexis, semantics, and pragmatics) and the basic terminology related to them
identify various research areas (e.g. general and applied linguistics) and research orientations (e.g. language and society) in linguistics
apply basic linguistic terms and analysis into English and describe the basics of English as a system
describe the structure of language using basic grammatical terminology
distinguish the English basic clause types from each other
analyze basic written and spoken English clauses and sentences, and
name and distinguish different phrases and their parts, such as noun phrases and verb phrases
