Description

The course aims to improve students’ oral skills in English and increase their theoretical and practical knowledge on a selection of themes related to spoken communication. Students are expected to be able to take part in university courses through English and later to use English in their professional lives. This is therefore a foundational course for further work in developing communication skills.

Learning outcomes

After the course the student

  • participate more competently and confidently in a variety of oral activities, such as group discussion, debate, negotiation and small talk
  • are comfortably intelligible in English (pronunciation)
  • have familiarized themselves with different varieties and accents of English
  • have basic knowledge of English phonology and prosody, including phonemic transcription
  • have familiarized themselves with video conferencing
  • can give an effective presentation

Completion methods

Method 1

Description:
36 hours of contact teaching: 6 lectures, 6 small group meetings, 12 pronunciation workshops. Written assignment on phonemic transcription, small group discussions, individual assignments, video presentation and readings.
Evaluation criteria:
Presentation, pronunciation exam, lecture exam. Attendance policy is 83% in small group meetings and pronunciation workshops.
