CEMS2410 Human Rights, Business and the Environment (4 cr)
Description
The course gives the student:
- Overview of the human rights related to business and environment
- Introduction of the connection between human rights and the protection of the environment
- Introduction of the connection between the sustainable business conduct and human rights
Learning outcomes
Understanding of key legal concepts related to protecting the environment, the main elements of a human rights-based approach to environmental protection, “green” human rights in different regional systems and the issue of environmental degradation and corporate accountability.
Understanding the legal frameworks, methodologies, and practical actions on how states and corporate actors can prevent, mitigate, and remedy potential or actual corporate related human rights abuses.
Additional information
Course will be completed mainly as online course, with 1-2 face-to-face meetings. Course will consist of 4 modules:
1. 2 HELP online courses (Human Rights Education of Legal Professionals courses offered by the Council of Europe)
o Business and Human Rights
o The Environment and Human Rights
2. 3-4 experts lectures
3. 1 case assignment: students will assess human rights aspects on a case
4. 1 essay with the topic of human rights, business and environment
