Description
Learning outcomes
After taking the course, the student knows what special morphological and functional characteristics fish need for living in various water habitats. The student knows examples of the life cycle characteristics of fish and effect of environmental conditions on life cycle and the composition of fish communities.
The student understands how the production of fish stocks is related to the characteristics of their habitat, the abundance of the fish population, and how abundance, production and harvesting of production (fishing) are related to each other. He knows the basic concepts and methodological foundations of the assessment of the size and production of fish populations.
The student knows the Finnish fisheries system, its key organizations and regulations related to fisheries. He can explain who has the right to fish and decide on fishing, as well as how fishing and catch are regulated in practice. The student also understands what kind of industry fisheries are in Finland and the EU and how the natural resources of fisheries are utilized globally, what fishing, aquaculture and fish processing are as economic activities and how they affect the environment.
