Description

The course introduces students to the different perspectives on the relation-ship between music and emotions from a research perspective and explores the theoretical background and trends of research within this field. The course gives participants a comprehensive overview of how music and emo-tions affect one another by introducing theories and research results, and discusses the relevance of the basic research for more applied contexts, such as education and rehabilitation.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student will be able to

- analyze, compare and critically evaluate different emotion theories, and un-derstand their significance in relation to musical behavior

- examine different musical activities, and evaluate the possibilities for re-searching these phenomena from the perspective of emotion research

- recognize relevant research methods for studying music-induced emotions

- understand their own musical experiences within the context of theories on emotion

- understand possibilities of applying the knowledge drawn from music and emotion research to various professional (e.g. music therapy, music educa-tion, cultural activities) and everyday life contexts

- communicate research topics of the field in Finnish or English.
