Content

This course focuses on how local language practices form an integral part of translocal networks, regions and publics.

Building on sociolinguistics, linguistic ethnography, applied linguistics and discourse study, this advanced level course has three main aims. Firstly, it gives students a comprehensive account of complex practices and ideologies of late modern multilingualism and how they integrate with transcultural activities in metropolitan, urban, popular, cultural and digital settings. Secondly, the course offers students sophisticated methods for the analysis of multilingual discourses, and provide them with opportunities to apply these methods in practice. Thirdly, the course highlights the educational and productive potential of the linguistic practices and proficiencies of multilingual and transcultural practices.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course students will be able to

  • understand and discuss complex forms of contemporary multilingualism and the ways in which they integrate with transcultural activities in physical and virtual environments
  • apply concepts and methods introduced in the course for the analysis of multilingual discourse practices
  • appreciate the educational and productive potential of multilingual and transcultural practices
