KEMS3880 Advanced Laboratory Exercises of Inorganic Chemistry (2–10 cr)
Description
Advanced inorganic laboratory exercises focuses on synthetic inorganic chemistry as well as different characterization methods and instruments used in chemical analysis, such as air and
moisture sensitive synthesis techniques, X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis and spectroscopic methods. The lab course consists of pick-and-choose modules that typically concentrate on one particular technique like the handling of air and moisture sensitive compounds Work modules 1-4 can be made in small groups (module dependently 1-3 persons), whereas 5 is individually made
module. The modules will be done at separately agreed group times.
Module subjects and ECTS credits:
- Preparation and characterization of paramagnetic materials, 2 ECTS credits
- Synthesis and characterization of metal-organic frameworks, 2 ECTS credits
- Synthesis and characterization of ionic liquids and their precursor salts, 2 ECTS credits
- Handling of air and moisture sensitive compounds, 2 ECTS credits
- Single crystal structure analysis (starting from a pre-measured dataset), 2 ECTS credits. Module consist of e.g. structure determination exercises using so-called direct methods, interpretation of the structures and their visualization. Dataset for the exercise will be given by the supervisor. NOTE: prerequisite for the module is successful pass of the Principals of X-ray diffraction methods course (KEMS3250).
Learning outcomes
After successfully completing the course, the student:
- is familiar with safe laboratory working practices, different structural and synthetic chemistry oriented methods, as well as with common extraction, purification and characterization techniques.
- Understands the applicability of various structural chemistry oriented characterization techniques, and has some basic knowledge on how to utilize them.
- Understands the theoretical basis of the most common methods in structural chemistry and knows how to apply them to resolve simple analytical problems.
- Knows how to handle air - and moisture sensitive materials, and can apply the techniques to perform simple air- and moisture sensitive synthesis.
- Has basic knowledge on structure determination principles and can apply the techniques to solve simple single crystal structures.

Description of prerequisites
Bachelor studies, particularly KEMA2140 Introduction to the chemistry of main group elements and KEMA2150 Chemistry of transition metals (or KEMA214 and KEMA215 Inorganic chemistry 1 and 2) and Laboratory Work in Inorganic Chemistry (KEMA220) need to be completed
