X-ray diffraction in structural chemistry
Description
Course focuses on:
- X-ray radiation, crystal systems, Bravais lattices, symmetry operations and space group symmetries, crystallographic programs and databases.
- measurement techniques, structure determination and refinement procedures and programs, and analysis of the crystal structure
- Course includes instrument demonstration and structure determination exercise.
Learning outcomes
After successfully completing the course, the student:
- understands basic principles of X-ray crystallography, and knows in the basic level how to apply them for characterizing single crystalline materials with X-ray diffraction.
- Understands the common practices how to use X-ray diffractometry in structural chemistry with single crystals and is aware of the crystal growing, structure solving and refeniment methods and analysis of the structure, and instrumentation.

- Manages the planning of work, tasks, and time use and adheres to agreed schedules.
- Can combine and apply the learned in the course in structural chemistry problems.
- Can independently search information and expand their knowledge.
- Can answer orally and in writing problems and questions and can clearly explain their answer or opinion.
- Will be able to discuss the use of the single crystal X-ray diffraction method using correct terminology and terminology in English and in Finnish
- Understands the research ethical issues related to the subject area of the course and take them into account in future structural or chemical work related to organic or inorganic chemistry.
