HELA002 Introduction to Finnish History (5 cr)

This course aims to provide an overview of Finnish history with its important turning points and developments from a long-term perspective. The objective of the course is to enable students to understand, identify and analyze the country’s past challenges and how they have been overcome.
The course is divided
into two parts: 1) lectures of Finnish history, focusing on Finland’s position
between East and West; and 2) thematic lectures on topics such as education,
the political system and cultural issues.
Completion methods
Lectures and written assignments with selected literature.
All students are
expected to attend at least 80% of the sessions.
Assessment details
Written assignments 90% and classroom activity 10%.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, students will have acquired a good understanding of:
- Finnish history, its key events, features and turning points as well as their effects on today’s Finnish culture and society
- Finnish history as part of European and global history
- Finland’s position as an intermediary between East and West
- selected specific topics within Finnish history
