  • Material derivative, convective derivative

  • conservation laws: mass, momentum, angular momentum, energy;

  • material laws, viscosity;

  • Euler equation, Stokes equation, Navier-Stokes equation;

  • solving flow equations: boundary and initial conditions;

  • stream function and velocity potential;

  • fictionless plane flows, elementary solutions and their superposition;

  • basics of airfoil theory

  • basics of turbulence

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to

  • Calculate the material derivative of a given quantity and the deformation rate of fluid element when the flow field is known.

  • Solve an unknown field in simple and well defined flow conditions.

  • Assess what conditions must be satisfied in order for a solution to the flow equations to exist.

  • Derive the mass, momentum and energy conservation laws for continuous matter

  • Formulate the stream function and the velocity potential for a given flow field and knows when they exist and derive new solution for frictionless plane flows from the elementary solutions.

  • Apply the theory of frictionless plane flows to simple problems.
