Content

This course introduces the basic linguistic terms and their application to the analysis of the English language at various levels. It also provides students with skills to analyze English using syntactic concepts and terminology.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course students will be able to

  • view language as a research subject and language use as a form of social action
  • explain basic approaches in the study of language (semantics, pragmatics, discourse analysis, conversation analysis)
  • recognise the central levels of linguistic description (phonology, morphology, syntax, lexis, semantics, pragmatics) in English and the basic terminology related to them
  • describe the structure of the English language using basic grammatical terminology, including distinguishing the basic clause types and phrases and their constituent elements from each other and understanding the connections between the different levels of structural analysis
  • analyze both spoken and written language and understand their multimodal basis for meaning-making
