Description
History of conservation and threats to the biodiversity. The value of biodiversity and factors that affect these values. Conservation biology of populations and habitats and conservation management. Interest conflicts between society and conservation biology and potential solutions for conservation.
Learning outcomes
After finishing this course the student:
- understands that the conservation biology is value based multidisciplinary discipline, which central goal is to produce information that can be applied to real problems
- comprehends that conservation biology is based on both ecology and evolutionary understanding
- knows the most serious threats to biodiversity and begins to understand the ecological and evolutionary mechanisms leading to the problems
- is able to use ecological argumentation to explain and justify the basic conservation practices
- knows the multi-dimensional aspects of conservation decision making and knows the main Finnish administration on conservation issues
