Description

The thematic module in Circular Economy provides the basis for instrumental analysis, metal recovery technology and biomass refining. In addition, the course introduces the Finnish chemical industry and the importance of recycling in industry.

Learning outcomes

After completing the studies in Circular Economy, the student knows theoretical basics of advanced analytical techniques, understands the potential for errors and interferences in analysis and can react to them as needed. The student has an overview of the chemical industry especially in Finland but also globally. The student has an understanding of the importance of environmental regulations and recycling in industrial processes. The student has an overview of the different recovery methods and their differences, as well as their suitability for different applications in metal recovery as well as the production of biofuels, chemicals and materials from biomass.

Working life skills

After completing the studies in Circular Economy, the student is able to evaluate the suitability of the analysis technique for different types of sample measurement and to choose the correct measurement technique. The student is also able to evaluate the pros and cons of different analysis techniques and their suitability for problematic sample matrices. The student is familiar with different recovery technologies and understands their application in the recovery of different raw materials. The student is familiar with the terminology related to biomass processing and is able to discuss the subject competently. The student understands how different products and energy are produced on a biomass basis and has an overall understanding of the chemical industry and thus the ability to work in the industry. The student has an understanding of the process industry and the importance of environmental regulations and recycling in processes.
