Description

Doctoral studies in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences stress the ability to conduct research independently, the ability to complete and report an extensive research project, and the ability to present and defend the research in a public examination. Doctoral education prepares the doctoral student to be an expert in the chosen field and provides the doctoral student with analytic thinking, problem-solving, communication and information technology skills.


In a doctoral programme of the Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy, the specialisation may be cultural policy, development studies, philosophy, gender studies, politics (political science), social work, sociology or social and public policy. The applicant must choose the specialisation when applying to the Doctoral Programme. However, it is not possible to apply to the specialisation of gender studies anymore.

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree presupposes the postgraduate studies required in the syllabus as well as a dissertation.
The Doctor of Social Sciences (D.Soc.Sc.) degree presupposes the postgraduate studies required in the syllabus as well as a dissertation.

The licentiate degree consists of a licentiate thesis and additional postgraduate studies.

Learning outcomes

After completing a doctoral degree in the fields of humanities or social sciences, students

  • are familiar with the central research and academic discourse relevant to their own research topic
  • demonstrate command of their field of research, including its development as well as theoretical and methodological starting points
