Topical course on sustainability gives an overview of concept of sustainability in software development and software business.

Completion methods
The course will be run fully online using Zoom and Moodle.
The course involves assignments either in groups or individually.
After completing the course, the students will gain an overview of the different aspects in sustainability in software business from environmental aspects to good design and from ethical software development to responsible professional practices.
In particular, the key objectives of the course are the following:
1. To understand the variety of sustainability concept
2. To able to take sustainable practices as part of student’s way of working
3. To gain experience in pursuing sustainable practices in software business

Additional information
Call for sustainable business has been a part of the act to address global challenge of climate change and environmental degradation for some time already. Last decades boom in AI applications and AI related incidents also give ethical awakening for the software engineering industry making developers aware of their potential impact on society and lives of others. Aiming for sustainability in software business, is not just work to minimize the environmental footprint of the processes and product; it is also work towards ethically sustainable solution. This course covers collection of different views of sustainability relevant to the software business from environmental aspects to good design and from ethical software development to responsible professional practices. Additionally, through practical exercises we will discuss the benefits and the challenges related on aiming for sustainability.
Description of prerequisites
The student attending the course has completed the IS&CS BSc studies at least partially. The student is capable of analyzing and discussing scientific articles.
