Content

In this course the students acquaint themselves with literatures from different parts of the English speaking world and different eras. The literatures studied represent short formats and comprise colonial and postcolonial narratives from different genres, for example short stories, chapters from travelogues or poetry. Theoretically, the course draws on literary and cultural theories introducing for example postcolonial, gender, posthumanist, ecocritical and linguistic aspects into the study of literature.

Completion methods

This completion method consists of participating to lectures, reading literature, discussion tasks, and writing a final essay.

Learning outcomes

On completing the course the students:

  • Are familiar with the research framework of new literatures in English
  • Have basic knowledge about the theoretical concepts discussed during the course
  • Can apply appropriate terminology in a critical discussion
  • Understand the concept of genre and its construction in relation to readership and reading
  • Is able to apply appropriate theories to an analysis of contemporary societies beyond literary representation
