This course is available only for foreign exchange students studying at University of Jyväskylä. The degree students of University of Jyväskylä cannot take it.

Description

The work and the work plan must always be agreed in advance, and the supervisor must discuss about the project with the responsible professor of the discipline at University of Jyväskylä. The content of project varies depending on the work to be performed.

The work introduces the occupational safety, research methods and implementation requirements of research in the given field of  Biological and Environmental Sciences. The project will allow the student to apply the gained knowledge and skills from courses in practice. At the end, the student prepares a written report.  

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course the student is familiar with the following main research steps: setting a research question(s), performing literature survey and analysis, choosing experimenting methods for a given topic, carrying out research tasks, interpreting and analyzing the obtained results, reporting and discussing the results, and drawing conclusions. The student is able to use the necessary experimenting techniques to solve research questions under supervision.

After completing the course:

  • who has carried out experimental work is able to work safely in the laboratory and identify risks related to laboratory work.
  • is able to produce a structured report on the exercises performed, analyze results numerically and graphically, and draw conclusions.
  • is able to work as a motivated, committed and responsible team member of the work community.
  • is able to work in the international environment.

Completion methods

Method 1

Evaluation criteria:
Approved completion of the course (grade 1/5) requires the supervised experimenting work and reporting of the conducted work. The points to be evaluated are a possible small-scale literature survey, conducted research, the analysis and discussion of the results, conclusions, the written final report and development of independent problem-solving skills. With guidance, the student can use relevant experimental techniques to solve research questions.
