Content

This course introduces the participants to theoretical conceptualizations of organizational communication, and explores communication phenomena in diverse workplaces from an interpersonal and group perspective. The course deals with issues such as organizational treatment of difference, communication in a multilingual workplace, cultural identity construction, crisis communication, relational development and the creation of a shared working culture.

Lectures, group assignment, learning portfolio. 

Assessment details

Passing the course requires completion of all required assignments in line with stated learning outcomes. An 80% attendance requirement is applied.

Grade-specific assessment criteria are introduced in the course.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course the student will be able to

  • understand how cultural diversity may be related to interpersonal communication phenomena in the workplace
  • apply concepts, theories and models of organizational communication to frame and address these phenomena
  • understand the socially constructed nature of diversity at the workplace
  • understand that diversity may play out in complex ways, and that culture and cultural differences are not the sole forces shaping interpersonal communication in workplace contexts
  • critically discuss ethical issues of communicating diversity at the workplace
  • describe, analyze, and criticize structures and processes of communication in organizational settings.
