Description

  • Foundations of quantum mechanics
  • Schrödinger's equation
  • Particle in a box
  • Harmonic vibrator
  • Hydrogen atom
  • Time dependent and independent perturbation theory
  • Electromagnetic radiation
  • Absorption and emission
  • Covalent bond

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student:
  • is able to interpret chemical and physical processes based on  concepts of quantum mechanics.
  • is able to solve simple quantum mechanical problems using both exact and various approximation methods.
  • can use perturbation theory to describe the interaction of atoms and molecules with electromagnetic radiation.
  • understand the nature of the covalent bond.

Working Life Skills

  • Problem solving skills and abstract thinking.

Description of prerequisites

Intermediate level Physical Chemistry courses KEMA2240 and KEMA2250 and Calculus 1 and 2, or equivalent. In addition, we strongly recommend Calculus 3, Linear Algebra and Geometry 1 and 2 to meet the mathematics level required for this course.
