KEMS3040 Measurement Uncertainty and Validation of Analytical Methods (4 cr)

Study level:
Advanced studies
Grading scale:
0-5
Language:
English, Finnish
Responsible organisation:
Department of Chemistry
Curriculum periods:
2020-2021, 2021-2022, 2022-2023

Description

Errors and their sources in analytical chemistry, mean and standard deviation, confidence limits, detection of outliers, calibration and linear regression, significance tests and analysis of variance.

Learning outcomes

After the course, students will be able to evaluate errors present in the analytical results and to critically assess their impact on the measurement results. The student is also able to compare the measured results obtained using different analytical methods and draw conclusions on the usefulness of the results.

Working life skills

After completing the course the student is able to critically evaluate the results of chemical analyzes. Students are able to validate new methods of analysis. Students can use Excel to perform statistical analysis of measurement data. In addition, students are familiar with the Mukit program for measuring measurement uncertainty.

Additional information

The course is lectured in 2020-2021 and 2022-2023. The course can be taken by book exam in 2021-2022.

Description of prerequisites

KEMA203 and KEMA204 Analytical Chemistry 1 and 2 and KEMA2140 Introduction to the chemistry of main group elements (or KEMA214 Inorganic Chemistry 1) or equivalent.
