This course is the first of two foundational qualitative research courses offered by IHME. This course focuses on developing general understandings of research design and specific approaches to inquiry and interview data-collection strategies. Following APA Qualitative Research Reporting Standards (Levitt et al., 2018), we use approach to inquiry to refer to the paradigmatic philosophical assumptions that underpin researchers’ understandings of research traditions. We use the term data-collection strategies to refer to the ways qualitative researchers gather data. The key aim of this course is to facilitate the learning of how the research design forms a fundamental basis for the methods and data-collection in qualitative studies.
