Content

The aim of the course is for the student to be able to use Finnish concisely, accurately, and idiomatically, to command a wide vocabulary, and to comprehend demanding discussion topics through reading, listening and through conversation. The student will also strengthen their skills in academic language use.

Advanced level course

TARGET GROUP: For students who have studied approximately 250 hours Finnish or have equivalent language skills

Completion methods

The course’s 60 contact hours are used to teach Finnish with the help of various tasks/exercises, which are done in groups, pairs, and independently. Some project work is also done on the course. Different language skill areas will be practiced on the course: speaking, listening and reading comprehension, and writing. Grammar and vocabulary studies are integrated with the work on these skills. Students on the course will read demanding academic texts and literary works and examine specialist documents from different areas of the media. The writing assignments on the course will focus on working life. The independent course work concentrates on reading longer texts and writing about the students’ professional field.The course material used on the course is a learning package specifically designed for the needs of students. The package can be collected from the course teacher for a fee. In addition to the class exercises, homework assignments are an important part of the course.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the students are expected to

know how to act fluently, precisely and according to the needs of each interaction situation
understand fictional and discipline-specific texts, to be able to evaluate what they have read and heard, and to make conclusions thereof
be able to communicate about their own discipline appropriately and idiomatically, both orally and in writing
be able to choose the language usage and learning strategies that suit each situation and to systematically utilise the possibilities offered by the environment to develop their language skills

Evaluation criteria:
Completion of the course requires active participation and attendance as well as returning the given tasks and project work within the agreed schedule. The grade that the students receive is based on both the tasks/exercises and the project work.
