Description
In this course, learners will develop their language skills while also exploring Dutch and Belgian culture. We will also discuss life at university for those who plan to go on an exchange to a Dutch speaking country.
This course focuses on using language for communication by training all 5 basic language skills: reading, listening, speaking, writing, and cultural awareness. During the course some lessons will be taught according to the ‘Flipping the classroom’-principle: students will be expected to prepare for some lessons watching videos online in which theory (grammar for example) is explained. During the next lesson this theory will be put into practice by in class discussions and in class individual and group assignments. When in class, learners are expected to actively participate and engage in coursework.Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, students are expected to:
be able to introduce themselves, including information about who they are and where they live, as well as information about their interests, feelings and studies
be able to ask and answer simple questions about themselves, their immediate needs, and very familiar topics;
be able to use simple standard sentences to ask for clarification, repetition, or help
be able to make or cancel an appointment both oral and written
understand and follow simple instructions associated with everyday situations
understand the main idea and some details of short spoken texts and dialogues
understand the main idea and some details of short written texts
be able to fill out written forms and write simple texts about themselves and their interests
feel comfortable in an environment where Dutch or Flemish is spoken
understand a little about Dutch and Belgian culture and manners
be familiar with some academic vocabulary and academic cultural differences in Belgium and the Netherlands
Overall, this course aims at reaching A1 level, as outlined by the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR)
Additional information
Language of instruction: Dutch, English and Finnish. This course is for beginners in Dutch. Both Finnish and exchange students are welcome. Finnish languages skills are not needed.
