Description

Content

Writing is a skill which can be developed with determination and hard work. This practical, hands-on course focuses on issues such as audience, purpose, organization, academic expression, style, and flow of academic texts. You will practice defining terms and concepts, commenting on data, referring to other writers’ work, and using language strategically to achieve your academic goals.

Completion methods

This course is a collaborative workshop combining activities and tasks with the main focus on the student's own text(s) both in class and as homework. Since the course consists of collaborative contact sessions (small group and/or individual F2F meetings) it cannot be completed as an on-line course.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course students are expected to:

  • Be familiar with the conventions, language, and principles of academic writing in their field
  • Understand cultural differences in research writing
  • Know how to integrate outside sources into their own texts in an ethically acceptable way
  • Define and use terms and concepts effectively for different audiences
  • Know how to assess and edit their own writing
  • Use online tools to facilitate the above.
