XDOC1005 Academic voice and integrating sources (2 cr)
One of the characteristics of academic writing is supporting one’s argument with outside sources. Yet the choice of appropriate sources and their integration into a text are often perceived as challenging. This course thus aims at supporting students in developing an awareness of different academic sources whilst providing strategies to skilfully draw on them e.g. direct quotation, paraphrasing, summarizing, and synthesizing. An optional session covering the latest APA referencing guidelines will offer participants the opportunity to become acquainted with the technical aspects of referencing, which form the base of every writer’s distinct academic voice.
On completion of the course, participants are expected to…
- be able to appropriately use outside sources with academic integrity
- be able to skilfully draw on sources to further their own argument
- have developed a distinctive academic writing voice
- show awareness of genre-specific writing requirements
