Description

This course will focus on the use of qualitative methods for research on information systems and information technologies. Several methods including interviewing, focus groups, participant observation, and ethnography will be taught and potentially tried out. Significant qualitative research findings of the social impact of information systems and information technologies will be read, to analyze what we know about the field thus far, how we know it, and as models of theories and methods for future research. Exercises will be assigned to develop qualitative research skills and best practices.

Learning outcomes

Students will know the underlying research philosophies and possible qualitative research designs in business and management.

Students will understand how a variety of qualitative research methods can be used in business and management

Students will be introduced to various approaches to qualitative data analysis

Students will analyze and critically evaluate a few published examples of qualitative research in information systems

NOTE! Not provided in the academic year 2020-21. If necessary, the course can be replaced by similar courses organised e.g. by INFORTE or IHME. International courses are also possible. Discuss about possible substitutive studies with your supervisor.
