Content

This course aids students practice and deepen their professional practices and communication literacy expertise in a real work context, as well as develop their insights of different career options. On this course, the students get to know the fundamentals of consultation planning, project management, and presentation of recommendations that could be implemented. In addition, this course will enable students’ understanding of how to apply various concepts and theories in the areas of communication and multimodal design literacies, and globalization within multilingual work contexts. In consultation with cross-departmental clients, students will assess communication and media needs analysis, plan areas for improvement to better reach stakeholders and produce recommended deliverables for a project.

Assessment details

Due to the ongoing global pandemic this course has been designed for remote and onsite learning and can be taken both on and offline. If students are overseas and unable to arrive they can participate in the livestreamed seminar. This requires asking questions and reflecting on the concepts. A discussion room with expected peer/group discussions will be utilized. Passing the course requires completion of all required assignments in line with stated learning outcomes. An 80% attendance requirement is applied whether it be on or offline/remote or onsite. Grade-specific assessment criteria are introduced in the course. Participation requires more active participation in either and oral or written (online/offline form). These reflections and discussions throughout the consultation process are collected for the portfolio and viewed as evidence of learning.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the students will be able to:

  • Effectively understand how concepts and theories are applied, adjusted and realized within an actual working life context.
  • Critically assess and reflect on the different stages of consulting on a project from the perspective of how team member strategies, practices impact on communication literacies.
  • Produce the deliverables in the three stage project – company project needs assessment, consultation plan, consultation/project milestone report, and the end product recommendations.
  • Develop their professional design, communication and work skills in the interface of theory and practice.
  • Recognize and evaluate their different career options and professional skills stemming from their practical experience.
