Description

Content

From a humanities perspective, the course covers ethnographic research methods, data collections, archival material life-cycle management and research ethics. The course includes data collection for an oral history project and a visit to an archive in Helsinki.

Completion methods

Taught course (major students) or independent work (book exam, reading group or assignment).

Assessment criteria

80% participation in teaching and written assignments or lecture exam. Completion by independent study – essay or book exam.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student will:

  • be able to use ethnographic research methods in the narrow and broad sense
  • know the life cycle of archival material and the structure of archival institutions
  • be able to apply methods to workplace contexts
  • be aware of the significance of the researcher’s role and
  • be confident applying research ethics, good scientific practice, knowledge management and permissions procedures.

Additional information

University of Jyväskylä students complete this as a 10-cr course. HUMAK students complete this as a 5-cr course.
