Description
Completion methods
Participation in teaching in the seminar. Students in other degree programmes do not complete this course.
As part of the course, students complete online course LIB1THP Information seeking (1 cr).
Content
Students draw up a research plan and their first thesis, which is presented to others and discussed at the seminar. The course also focuses on the principles of conducting research, information retrieval, the use of sources as research material and ethical issues.
Assessment criteria
Attendance, research plan, written seminar assignment, presentation, active participation in discussion.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will:
- be familiar with the nature of historical research and the key steps of the process
- be able to use source materials and to develop a thesis based on them
- be able to independently draw up a feasible research plan and a thesis
- have practised discussing a variety of themes both critically and analytically and arguing academically
- have an understanding of information retrieval, structuring and analysis
- be able to use key qualitative and quantitative methods and apply them in source critical research work
- be able to take into account ethical issues related to their research field
- be able to apply the principles of project work.
