This course will explore communicative, task-based language teaching from both theoretical and practical perspectives.

Completion methods

Contact teaching: Classes will consist of lectures, group work and discussion, along with homework reading. The final classes will consist of students' own practice teaching sessions and the final course assignment will be a portfolio of tasks that students’ have designed themselves.

Assessment details

Active participation in class (80% attendance), a practice teaching session and a task-portfolio.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course students will be able to:

  • understand the principles of communicative language teaching in general and task- based language teaching specifically;
  • draw from a wide repertoire of different types of tasks when teaching;
  • design effective language learning tasks for different kinds of learners (applying language learning theory and research findings);
  • design task-based courses, sequencing tasks in ways that promote learners' progression;
  • implement tasks in the classroom effectively.
